Designer, climber, enthusiast.

Currently based in Hong Kong.

Hello! I am working on a big project that I hope to announce in the future.

If you are interested in working with me as a freelancer in design and illustration, feel free to reach out via email!
florencewong1020@gmail.com

Types of work I’m available for includes but is not limited to: educational illustrations or graphics, film posters, editorial illustration, book covers, album design, wall art. I’m particularly interested in film, outdoors, climbing, dance, art, and sustainability.

Previously, I was a senior product designer at Wave, designing their mobile app (all-in-one financial management system for small business owners). Prior to that, I was spear-heading product design at CFI Education as their second designer in the company, improving its products (student dashboard, website, among other things); maintaining a scalable, comprehensive, component-based design system; and hiring, onboarding and mentoring new designers. I also previously designed for product design content creator femke.design. Throughout, I have also maintained a freelance practice in design and illustration.

See my full career journey on my LinkedIn. If you’re interested in some of my previous lives, follow my art (casual pieces, process pieces) on Instagram, browse my coding projects on GitHub.

Life Path

I’ve re-written this section multiple times over the years (2016 to now), so it’s always a bit funny whenever I read it over again. It’s a bit of a mishmash of different things I’ve wanted to include from different years, but here goes:

I grew up in Hong Kong among third culture kids in an international school with a plan to pursue Math and Environmental Science and somehow “save the earth”, then ended up at liberal arts college Carleton College where I lived in an intentional commune and fell in love with the process of painting and coding. Design was my way to bridge the two, although I ended up doing way less of both…

Since then, I have also lived and worked in Minneapolis teaching art, hanging out with vegans, and freelancing with graphic design. When I moved to Vancouver, Canada, I pursued a Masters degree in Digital Media where I learnt more about business, product design and project management and ultimately unfortunately became less of an idealist and more of a capitalist. As I entered product design, I started appreciating it more, loving the craft and complexity of designing for different users and use cases while ensuring cohesiveness with the whole design ecosystem. And most of all, I loved working with a team to iterate, deliver and celebrate wins together.

I keep having to rewrite and update this bio, so I’ll include some points from the years before:

  • 2016-18: In my spare time, I can be found longboarding (my role model), working in coffee shops, meeting strangers, and obsessing over hobbies.

  • 2019: When I’m not designing, you can find me chilling, taking care of my houseplants, and thinking about life.

  • 2020-21: Wow 2016 me was fun! Having had to deal with health concerns during the pandemic, I’ve been spending most of my free time focused on health and running, cooking, hanging out with my partner, and being grateful for what I have.

  • Later 2021: Life has been good. I have recently been getting into frisbee, biking, rollerskating, and skiing!

  • 2022-2024: People and relationships are things that matter to me most; I’ve gotten into some social hobbies: climbing, playing the tenor sax, ceramics. (2024: But I’ve been feeling like I need to simplify my hobbies now!)

I like meeting kind, inspiring, and open-minded people—please drop me a line and say hi if you want to grab a tea!
