Mourning Breakfast

Earthenware w/ underglaze, slip, clear glaze
2016

I had a lot of fun with this project.

Sometimes, in the pursuit of a greasy, yummy breakfast, we end up forgetting about the actual food and industries we're supporting.

It’s pretty obvious that bacon is made from slaughtering pigs, but producing eggs and dairy often have cruel side effects as well.

With efficiency comes cruelty in our food industry: to weed out unproductive units of production, the egg industry grinds up baby male chicks when they’re born, and the dairy industry slaughters calves for veal.

I wanted to create an experience where people can visually recognize the food they're eating — and at the same time, also be reminded of where their food comes from.

Sometimes we just need a little reminder and nudge to remember that what we're eating, the "units of production" as the industry sees them, also feel pain and suffer.
